The areas in brief
Visitors searching for Namba and Dotonbori usually want the same place, and the confusion is understandable. The Osaka tourism bureau says Dotonbori is the part of Osaka commonly referred to as Minami, which means south in Japanese, and a hub for youth culture and new trends.1 Namba sits in the same Minami area, with Shinsaibashi and America Mura holding a concentration of department stores and large commercial businesses.7
The Japan National Tourism Organization draws the line more sharply. It says the Dotonbori River divides Shinsaibashi and Namba, and the Dotonbori Bridge is the convergence point for both neighborhoods.6 The canal is the border, and the bridge is the gate between the shopping side and the entertainment side.
Walking between them is easy. The tourism bureau says Namba's Dotonbori is within walking distance of Shinsaibashi, reached via Ebisu Bridge.8 Shinsekai, by contrast, is a separate neighborhood in the south that needs a short train ride or a longer walk. The rest of this page takes each area in turn.

Descriptions and distances are the Osaka tourism bureau's; the station column names the nearest station the sources give for each area.1
Namba is the transport hub of the area, and the one most visitors pass through. In the tourism bureau's words, Dotonbori lies right outside Namba Station, where the Nankai and Kintetsu railways meet the Midosuji, Sennichimae and Yotsubashi metro lines.14
The area is also a stage. The bureau lists the Osaka Shochikuza Theatre, Namba Grand Kagetsu and TOHO Cinemas Namba among the culture and entertainment facilities of Namba,2 and says many restaurants here are open late, even for Osaka.13 If your evening runs past dinner, this is the side of the river where the lights stay on.
Namba also holds quieter stops. Hozenji Yokocho is a 5-minute walk from Namba Station,12 and Namba Parks, which opened in October 2003, has a garden of about 70,000 plants from the third floor up.15,16 Namba Yasaka Shrine, with its lion-head plaque, is about 7 minutes on foot from Namba Parks.17
Shinsaibashi is the shopping half of the pair. The tourism bureau calls it Osaka's premier commercial area, with well-established department stores, specialty shops and luxury brands.22 Its famous shopping street, Shinsaibashisuji, runs 580 meters north to south and is lined with around 180 stores including clothing shops and restaurants.3
The street is old and busy. The bureau says it has a history of 380 years and was already an established shopping area in the Edo period,25 and that visitors number about 60,000 on weekdays and about 120,000 on weekends and holidays.26 The name itself comes from the bridge that separates Senba and Shimanouchi.27
Getting there is straightforward. The Japan National Tourism Organization says to take the Midosuji Line from Osaka or Umeda Station to Shinsaibashi Station and look for the exit to the arcade.9 Walk the length of the arcade and you emerge at Ebisubashi bridge in Dotonbori.10 If you are staying near Shinsaibashi and Dotonbori, that arcade is your natural route to dinner.

The long walk
Namba and Dotonbori stops
Dotonbori is the middle of the story, and its identity is the water. The Japan National Tourism Organization says the district sits beside a 400-year-old canal.29 The tourism bureau adds that the prosperity of the entertainment district of theater and kabuki, with a growing number of teahouses, became the basis for its status as a place for food and live entertainment.21
Today the draw is the signs and the promenade. The bureau lists huge signs from Glico to Kani Doraku, Osaka Ohsho, Kinryu Ramen and Meiji's Karl,30 and the Glico sign is lit from 18:00 to 24:00.11 About 600 m of riverside between Ebisu Bridge and the Nipponbashi and Minatomachi area has been improved for strolling.20
If you want the neon with a view of the water, the cruise offered on this site is a 20-minute trip along the canal from $13, rated 4.5 from 1,751 reviews. It suits a traveler who has already walked the arcade from Shinsaibashi and wants a different angle before dinner in Namba.

Readers who compare Shinsekai vs Dotonbori are choosing between two kinds of retro. The tourism bureau says Shinsekai is a downtown area in southern Osaka famous for Tsutenkaku Tower, Janjan Yokocho Street and a giant pufferfish lantern sign.5 The area grew out of the 5th Domestic Industrial Exposition, held in Tennoji in 1903.4
Its main alley is smaller than the Dotonbori strip. Janjan Yokocho is a lively street of about 50 shops stretching 130 meters from north to south.19 Dotonbori, by comparison, is a district with a canal, theaters and a promenade, while Shinsekai is built around a tower and a single bustling alley.
Getting there takes a little planning. Ebisucho Station on the Sakaisuji Line sits directly beside Shinsekai, and Dobutsuenmae Station is a 3-minute walk away, the tourism bureau says.23 A guided night walk is one way to see it; the listing for a Shinsekai night walk is in the cards below, and it can sit on a different evening from the canal.

Moving between areas
Between Shinsaibashi and the canal sits a corner for a younger crowd. The tourism bureau suggests visiting America Mura as well when you are in Shinsaibashi, describing it as an area for Osaka's younger crowd.24 It is a short stroll from the Midosuji Line and a counterweight to the department stores.
The map at the top of this page pins America Mura along with Shinsaibashi Station, Namba Parks, Namba Yasaka Shrine and the Imamiya Ebisu Shrine. Open the Minami tab to see how they spread south and west of the canal. Together they show that Dotonbori is a small piece of a much bigger entertainment and shopping district.
If you only have one evening, treat the areas as chapters rather than rivals. Start at the arcade in Shinsaibashi, cross the bridge, spend the evening on the canal and finish in Namba. If you have more, use another evening for Shinsekai, and leave America Mura for a daytime stroll when the shops are open.
Choose Dotonbori if you want the signs and the water in one frame. The bureau describes the huge signs and the large Ferris wheel in front of Don Quijote, where at night all of the neon lights shine.31 It is the place for photos and for a first walk after dark.
Choose Namba if you want transport, late dining and theaters in one spot. Many restaurants there are open late, even for Osaka.13 Choose Shinsaibashi if shopping comes first. The shopping street runs 580 meters and is lined with around 180 stores.3 Choose Shinsekai for a more retro walk with a tower and a pufferfish sign.5
The quiz at the top of the page narrows the choice in two taps and ends on a real listing with a starting price. We do not sell hotels, so the decision here is about where to spend your hours rather than where to sleep. Whatever you pick, the areas are connected by the Midosuji Line, which runs from Shinsaibashi Station on toward Namba.
