A district known for its food also holds a Ferris wheel, a mossy alley, a riverside promenade, live theater and some of the most famous signs in Osaka. Here is how to string the sights into a single evening.

The sights in brief
Visitors who search for the Dotonbori district often picture a single lane of signs, but the tourism bureau describes a wider area. It says Dotonbori is the part of Osaka commonly referred to as Minami, which means south in Japanese, and a hub for youth culture and new trends.6 The streets, the river, the arcades and the theaters all count as part of it.
Getting in is simple. The tourism bureau places the district right at Namba Station, which is served by the Nankai and Kintetsu railways and by the Osaka Metro's Midosuji, Sennichimae and Yotsubashi lines.7 From the station you can reach most of the sights on this page on foot.
This page is about things to see and do rather than things to eat, so food gets only a passing mention. Treat what follows as the set of stops between meals. Each one has an official description behind it, and most can be combined into one evening with time left for a snack.

The signs are the first thing to do, and the cheapest. The Osaka tourism bureau lists huge signs from Glico to Kani Doraku, Osaka Ohsho, Kinryu Ramen and Meiji's Karl.11 Close to Ebisu Bridge it picks out Kani Doraku with its giant crab sign and the Nakaza Kuidaore Building marked by Kuidaore Taro.12
Kuidaore Taro is a figure to look for. A Bunraku puppeteer made him, and the tourism bureau calls him Japan's first robot billboard.13 The bureau also points to the Daruma Minister landmark on the rooftop of the Kushikatsu Daruma building, which has drawn attention for its rotating gimmick.14
For the Glico runner, the bureau says the best time for photography is after sunset, when the neon lights shine.15 Our page on the Glico sign lists each version of the sign and where to stand. Give the signs a slow loop in both directions: the view from the bridge is different from the view from the promenade.
In front of the Don Quijote store stands the large Ferris wheel called Ebisu Tower, and at night all of the neon lights shine around it.22 The tourism bureau describes it as an oval wheel 77.4 meters tall at the Don Quijote Dotonbori store.1
Its history is a little rocky. It first opened in March 2005, but operations were suspended in June 2008 after issues were discovered,23 and it reopened after renovation in January 2018.24 The bureau says one ride takes 15 minutes,2 and the 32 gondolas can rotate 180 degrees horizontally.25
On cost, the bureau lists a standard pass at 600 yen, a Majica pass at 1,000 yen and a VR gondola at 1,600 yen.17 Fees and hours can change, so check the ticket counter when you arrive. A ride is a calm change of pace after the crowds, and the view runs along the canal toward the signs.

The long walk
Private or group, Minami stops
A short walk from the signs, the mood changes completely. The tourism bureau says Hozenji Yokocho consists of two alleyways running 80 meters east to west and 3 meters wide, with kappo restaurants, bars, okonomiyaki and skewered cutlet shops.3 It is a 5-minute walk from Namba Station.8
The alley is known for a statue. The bureau says that after the war the Fudoson statue became covered in moss because many people poured water over it in prayer.26 Visitors still do the same, so bring a little patience and leave the moss alone while you watch the ritual.
The alley also has literary fame. The bureau says it is known as the setting of the novel Meoto Zenzai by Sakunosuke Oda.27 The stone steps and the lantern light make Hozenji Yokocho a place to slow down, and it works well as the quiet middle of an evening that begins and ends in the neon.

The Tombori Riverwalk is the free way onto the canal. The tourism bureau's convention pages say the promenade was built in December 2004,18 and about 600 m between Ebisu Bridge and the Nipponbashi and Minatomachi area has been improved.4 It is about a 10-minute walk from Osaka Metro Namba Station.9
The walk has things to look at. Along the route the bureau lists the Don Quijote store with its large Ferris wheel and the famous Glico sign,28 and wall art called Dotonbori Art has appeared since 2019.29 The Riverwalk is also the quietest spot for a rest if the main street feels crowded.
For a view from the water, the cruise offered on this site is a 20-minute trip on the Dotonbori River, rated 4.5 from 1,751 reviews and starting from $13. The Japan Tourism Agency describes a canal cruise that goes under Ebisu-bashi Bridge and past the Running Man sign with a guide's commentary.20 The listing offers free cancellation up to 24 hours before.

In front of Don Quijote is the large ferris wheel, Ebisu Tower. At night, all of the neon lights shine, and the area is filled with life no matter where you look.
Before you set out
Live performance still has a place here. The tourism bureau lists kabuki at the Shochikuza Theater, puppet theater at the National Bunraku Theater, and comedy at the Namba Grand Kagetsu Theater and Kadoza Theater.21 The Shochiku-za opened in 1923 as a movie and revue theater and turned to kabuki in 1999.30
A short walk toward Namba leads to Namba Yasaka Shrine, known for a giant lion's head. The bureau says the votive plaque measures 12 meters high, 11 meters wide and 10 meters deep,19 and a tug-of-war ritual is held on the third Sunday of January.31 The shrine is about 7 minutes on foot from Namba Parks.16
Namba Parks gives the green counterpoint. The bureau dates its opening to October 2003, on the ground where Osaka Stadium once stood,32 and from the third floor up it has about 70,000 plants on terraced levels called Parks Garden.33 Both stops add something calm to a day of neon, and both are close to the Namba end of the district.
Start at Namba Station and walk through to the Hozenji alley, which is a 5-minute walk away.8 Take a few minutes at the mossy statue and the stone steps, then continue to the canal. The Riverwalk is about a 10-minute walk from the station,9 so you can join it from either end.
Time the Glico sign for your arrival. The sixth sign is lit from 18:00 and switched off at 24:00.10 Add the Ferris wheel for a 15-minute ride,2 and finish with the 20-minute cruise if the weather suits. The bureau adds that many Namba restaurants are open late, even for Osaka, so dinner can come last.5
If you would rather follow a guide, the cards below compare three options from the listings. A short cruise gives you the water and the signs. A walking tour with a river cruise adds the alleys, and a longer private or group walk takes in more of Minami. Use the calculator at the top of the page to price any of them for your party.
