Which station is Dotonbori's

Dotonbori sits in Minami, the half of Osaka around Namba, Shinsaibashi and the canal itself.6 The shopping district's own access page says it is a short walk from Namba Station on the Midosuji Line, exit 14, and from the Sennichimae Line, the Nankai railway and Kintetsu Osaka Namba Station.7 The Tombori River Cruise lists Namba on the Yotsubashi, Sennichimae and Midosuji lines, Nankai Namba, and Hanshin and Kintetsu Osaka Namba as its access stations.8

Other stations work as well. The Bureau puts the Tombori pier about a 5 to 10 minute walk from Namba, Shinsaibashi and Nipponbashi stations.5 The Wonder Cruise lists Nippombashi on the Sennichimae and Sakaisuji lines and Kintetsu Nippombashi as its stations.9 If your hotel or your route lands you at Shinsaibashi, the Midosuji Line's next stop is Namba, and the canal is walkable from either.2

Expect a crowd at Namba. Osaka Metro NiNE ranks it the second busiest Osaka Metro station, with 176,554 daily riders in a 2018 survey.10 Allow extra time for the walk from the gates to the canal on a busy evening. Pick your exit before you go up the stairs, and note that the shopping district names exit 14 on the Midosuji Line.7

From Kansai International Airport

The rail route is direct. Kansai Airport Station is directly connected to the 2nd floor of the Terminal 1 Building and the 2nd floor of the Aeroplaza Building.11 The airport's own page gives the Nankai ride from Kansai Airport to Namba as about 34 minutes by Rapi:t α, 39 minutes by Rapi:t β and 43 minutes by Airport Express.1 The shopping district's page says the Nankai Airport Express Rapid takes about 35 minutes.14 The two official pages round differently, and the choice between train types is a matter of which departs next.

Buses are the other option. The shopping district says the Airport Limousine bus to OCAT (Namba) takes about 50 minutes, and the airport's bus table lists Namba (OCAT) as a destination from Terminal 1.14,15 JR is the route for travelers heading to other stations: the Airport Express HARUKA takes about 50 minutes to Shin-Osaka, and the Kansai Airport Rapid Service takes about 65 minutes to Osaka station.16,17 For Dotonbori itself, the Nankai line ends at Namba, where the walk begins.

A pass can fold the ride in. The Kansai International Airport version of the Osaka Amazing Pass is a 28-hour ticket at 5,300 yen that allows a one-way Nankai Railway ticket from Kansai Airport Station to Namba Station.18,19 The same page says Namba to Kansai Airport Station is not allowed.20 That makes it a one-way arrival ticket, and the passes guide on this site explains how the day starts and what it covers.

From Itami and from Shin-Osaka

Osaka has two airports, and Itami is the domestic one. The shopping district points travelers from Osaka International Airport (Itami) to the Airport Limousine bus for Namba or OCAT (Namba), which takes about 40 minutes.21 The bus is the route the official page itself names for Itami.21 If you arrive on a domestic flight, that bus puts you at the same Namba area as the Kansai rail line.

Shin-Osaka is the Shinkansen station. The Osaka Convention & Tourism Bureau says the Shinkansen terminal is Shin-Osaka and that JR and Osaka Metro run between Shin-Osaka and Osaka Station every 5 to 10 minutes.23 The Bureau lists the Shinkansen from Tokyo at 2 hours 30 minutes and from Nagoya at 1 hour.24,25 From Shin-Osaka you can stay on the subway: the Midosuji Line serves Shin-Osaka, Umeda, Shinsaibashi and Namba in that order.2

The first-train timetable gives the ride time. On the first Midosuji train toward Nakamozu, Shin-Osaka at 05:08 reaches Namba at 05:23, which is 15 minutes.2 The last train toward Shin-Osaka leaves Namba at 00:10 and reaches Shin-Osaka at 00:26, which is 16 minutes.26 Both figures come from the published timetables for those two trains, and your own departure will differ by the wait on the platform.

From Osaka Station and Umeda

Umeda is the heart of Kita, the northern half of the city, and Namba the heart of Minami. The Bureau divides Osaka city into Kita, centered around Umeda, and Minami, centered around Namba and Tennoji, and says the subway links the two easily.29 For Osaka Station to Dotonbori the subway line that does it is the Midosuji Line, which calls at Umeda, Hommachi, Shinsaibashi and Namba.13

On the first southbound train the ride from Umeda at 05:15 to Namba at 05:23 is 8 minutes.2 On the last southbound train, Umeda at 00:08 to Namba at 00:17 is 9 minutes.13 That gives a travel time of under ten minutes at either end of the day. Add a few minutes for the walk from the platform to the right exit and the stairs at Namba, then the 5 to 10 minutes on foot to the pier.5

The Osaka Loop Line is the alternative if you are already at a JR station. It runs in a circle around Osaka city and is convenient for transferring to private railways.30 For Dotonbori the Midosuji Line is the direct path, ending at the station the shopping district itself names.7 The Osaka City Bus is the alternative for short hops, with a flat fare of 210 yen on all sections with some exceptions.31

From Osaka Castle

The castle is on a different line. The Osaka Castle Museum lists Tanimachi 4-chome (T23, C18), Morinomiya (C19, N20), Osaka Business Park (N21) and Temmabashi (T22) as its access stations.22 Osaka Metro NiNE says the Chuo Line is the only one of the nine Osaka Metro lines that connects to every other line, and that Morinomiya and Tanimachi Yonchome stations give walking access to Osaka Castle Park.4

Osaka Castle to Dotonbori is a change at Hommachi. On the Chuo Line Hommachi (C16) connects to the Midosuji and Yotsubashi lines, and Tanimachi 4-chome (C18) and Morinomiya (C19) lie beyond Sakaisuji-Hommachi (C17).3 So the route from the castle is the Chuo Line to Hommachi, then the Midosuji Line to Namba. On the last southbound Midosuji train Hommachi at 00:13 to Namba at 00:17 is 4 minutes.13

Check the Chuo leg on a route map before you set out; the sources here give the station codes, not the ride time. The codes run C18 for Tanimachi 4-chome, C17 for Sakaisuji-Hommachi and C16 for Hommachi.3 A castle visit and an evening cruise pair well, and the pass day described elsewhere on this site covers the metro leg and the museum entry.32

Before you travel

A checklist for the trip to Namba

Before you leave3

  • Check the last Midosuji train before a late dinner13
  • Choose a plain ticket or a pass by your number of rides27
  • Note your cruise slot, up to 21:00 on the Tombori boats12

At Namba3

  • Look for exit 14 on the Midosuji Line7
  • Expect crowds on the platform at rush hours28
  • Keep a hand on luggage in the busiest station10

On arrival3

  • Allow 5 to 10 minutes on foot to the pier5
  • Read the cruise voucher for the exact pier
  • Use the 28-hour airport pass only for the arrival ride20

Rush hours, first trains and last trains

Avoid the commuter peaks if you have luggage. Osaka Metro NiNE says weekday mornings are busiest from 7:00 AM to 8:00 AM with the rush lasting until about 9:00 AM, and that the evening rush begins around 5:00 PM and peaks around 6:00 PM.28 An airport arrival in that window lands you on a crowded Midosuji platform.28

Late arrivals are covered. The first Midosuji train reaches Namba at 05:23, and the last trains reach it at 00:17 southbound and leave it at 00:10 northbound.2,13,26 A cruise that ends near 22:00, with a walk to the station and a short wait, fits comfortably inside those hours. Dinner and a second round in Dotonbori can push a night out toward the last train, and the clock on your phone is the guide.

Pick the ticket by the number of rides. A 1-day Osaka Amazing Pass costs 3,500 yen, and an Enjoy Eco Card costs 820 yen for an adult, or 620 yen on weekends and holidays, for unlimited Osaka Metro and City Bus rides.33,27,34 For a single arrival and a single evening, a plain ticket is cheaper than either, and the Osaka Amazing Pass guide on this site shows when a pass pays for itself.
